Cardboard Chair:
For this fun project we had to design and create a cardboard chair. The chair could only be made from cardboard and we were not allowed to use anything but cardboard to connect the pieces together.
For this fun project we had to design and create a cardboard chair. The chair could only be made from cardboard and we were not allowed to use anything but cardboard to connect the pieces together.
Key Concepts:
Tensile strength- is a measure of the ability of a material to withstand tension without breaking
Compressive strength- is a measure of the ability of the material to withstand crushing forces.
Center of Gravity- is the average location of the weight of an object.
Aspects that our chair had to include:
Function- Chair being able to support a person while still being comfortable.
Structure- chair supports enough weight every side of the chair
Aesthetics- How appealing chair looks to the eye.
Economy- How much cardboard used to complete the chair.
Integrity- Is the honest to complete the work and make the best possible chair.
Trade-offs- What trade-offs we did for each aspect of the chair.
Decision Making decisions were based on facts and evidence of work.
Reflection:
This project was very fun and by far my favorite. Designing the chair was the hardest part but we created a very efficient and structurally sound chair. There were some very important things that I learned from this project. First, I learned how to improve on things based on previous mistakes. For example, the first time we tried creating a chair we learned where the weak points were in the cardboard and our chair collapsed. We started over with this valuable information and we created one of the most structurally sound and functional chairs as well as one of the most appealing chairs. Another thing I learned was to plan what you are going to do before you start it. We started making cuts before we measured it on our first chair which is one of the reasons that it collapsed. There are also a couple things that I could have improved on as well. First, I could have measured out exactly each length of cardboard before cutting it because some of the cardboard pieces were too long and we had to cut them again. Lastly, I could have improved on planning out the chair more precisely instead of starting right away. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and learned a lot during it.
