Photosynthesis Lab
Hypothesis/purpose: I predicted that the black paper stopped photosynthesis because it blocks sunlight from reaching the leaf. I thought that the black paper would decrease the intensity of light. I also predicted that the clear paper would not stop photosynthesis and increase intensity of light. The black paper had a longer wave length while the clear paper had a shorter wave length.
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Cover 3 leaves in cellophane, black paper, and the original leaf
2. Wait 48 hours
3. Cut off experimental and control leaves, remove the papers
4. Roll up leaves and put into test tube and label
5. Extract chlorophyll with hot alcohol
6. Rinse in water
7. Place in petri dish
8. Cover with iodine
9. Wait 1 minute, then remove leaf and place on paper towel
10. Observe and record observations in a data table, giving numerical value for color change
Materials:
- calendula (plant)
- black paper
- clear paper (colored cellophane)

Analysis/Conclusion: The black paper is lighter than the uncovered leaf and decreased in intensity and increased in wavelength. No sunlight occurred with the black paper. The clear paper increased in wavelength and decrease in intensity. The black paper had less photosynthesis happening. Red paper is darker than the untreated leaf. Green has the same color as the untreated leaf. Finally, blue is lighter than the untreated leaf and red is darker than the green. This is different than what our group expected because we thought that the red was going to be similar to the black, and that the green was going to be lighter than red and black paper.

I found this lab interesting because I had never thought about the different types of light and how plant growth is affected by it. Learning these new things made this lab very interesting. Next time, I would try to understand what we are trying to test for before actually starting the lab. My group collaborated very well. My group consisted of Matt Iacovelli, Robert Schinske, and Nick Radcliffe. We each had our own part during the lab which made the lab more efficient.
